The Communication Studies program offers a variety of dynamic classes that provide the firm foundation necessary for creating a successful career in fields such as media, health communication, human resources, public relations, and marketing. Students will graduate with an understanding of how communication theory is used in professional environments. They will learn how communication informs, solves problems, persuades, and delivers messages that resonate. Classes range from non-verbal communication, public speaking, and visual communication. Students will have the ability to put their knowledge and experience into practice as they take up positions of influence in their communities.
Students in the Communication program can collaborate with faculty in the Technology Access Program (TAP) on various research projects. TAP conducts communication technology-related research with the goal of providing useful, and relevant information to industry, government, and deaf or hard-of-hearing consumers looking for equality in communication.
Students in Communication Studies are required to do an internship for career exploration, job experience, and/or the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained in the major. Students can earn up to three credit hours toward the major requirements through an internship. There are opportunities to intern with:
Students can also participate in service projects and program competitions and build their communication network through the National Communication Association Honor Society.
Lambda Pi Eta, the official honor society of the National Communication Association, is an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies. Lambda Pi Eta encourages and recognizes scholastic achievement, stimulates interest in communication, promotes professional development, exchanges ideas about the field, fosters close relationships among faculty and students, and explores options for graduate study. To achieve the honor of Lambda Pi Eta membership, students must have junior or senior standing with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. They must have completed at least 12 hours in Communication Studies with a grade point average of 3.25 or higher in the major/minor, must be in the upper 35% of their class, and are required to be enrolled full-time in good standing.

Students meeting the high standards of the National Communication Association are inducted into Gallaudet's chapter (Iota Nu) of the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society on an annual basis. Once a student is inducted into Lambda Pi Eta he or she is a member for life....
