Dr. Poorna Kushalnagar, ’93, Special Assistant to the Provost for Research and Engagement, is one of three authors of a in the July 15 edition of the Journal of Internal Medicine. They propose that there is a second pathway to COVID-19 infection: self-infection to the lungs via one’s one speech. An NIH researcher contacted Dr. Kushalnagar to test the hypothesis that deaf people who vocalize less are less susceptible to COVID. A small sample supported this hypothesis, but more research is needed. Read more on .

Dr. Julie Hochgesang, G-’07 & PhD ’14, associate professor in the Department of Linguistics, will be featured on Artful Science on Sunday, July 25 at noon ET. The show’s host, Aaron Dworkin, a professor at the University of Michigan and a MacArthur Fellow, interviewed her about her work in early June.
