Dr. Julie Hochgesang named plenary presenter...
Dr. Julie Hochgesang, ’07 & PhD ’14, an associate professor in the Department of Linguistics in the School of Language, Education, and Culture, will deliver a plenary address at the Linguistic Society of America annual meeting, to be held January 6-9, 2022 at the Washington Hilton. She is one of three announced plenary presenters, and is believed to be the second deaf plenary presenter in the organization’s history, after Dr. Carol A. Padden in 2007.
Dr. Hochgesang is a deaf linguist who studies the phonetics/phonology and the documentation of signed languages, with an interest in making linguistics accessible to the public. She also maintains the ASL Signbank, and chairs the university’s Institutional Review Board..The was founded in 1924 to advance the scientific study of language and its applications. The organization plays a critical role in supporting and disseminating linguistic scholarship both to professional linguists and to the general public.
