Pride 2021
Happy PRIDE to all who celebrate! Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people celebrate pride annually in June, to commemorate the Stonewall riots in June 1969. In the early 1970s, Pride marches only took place in a few cities and they were much smaller than the ones you see today. The LGBTQ+ community has grown and evolved since those early days. There is an excellent docuseries called 鈥淧ride鈥 that highlights the history of the LGBTQ+ movement. It is available on FX and Hulu. We highly recommend it!
The Gallaudet community has a large number of LGBTQ+ members. Many of our students, staff, and faculty come to Gallaudet feeling safe and respected for who they are. The tireless efforts of LGBTQ+ activists, including some of our alumni, over the past several decades has paved the way for our continuing progress. The LGBTQ Resource Center, established in 2011, has created much positive change on campus. One of the Center鈥檚 highlights is the establishment of Lavender Graduation in 2012. This event has become one of the favorite annual events on campus; it is positively inspiring.
The privateLibrary will showcase LGBTQ+ books for Pride Month. Check their and accounts for more information. Also, DC鈥檚 Capital Pride Alliance is hosting a variety of events throughout the month of June — some virtual, some in person. Check for more information.
Go forth and walk with PRIDE.
