Eric Gregory, a senior from Metairie, Louisiana, and a four-time All-American in track and field, continues to impress, and has been joined by other Gallaudet student-athletes in rewriting the school record book. 

Gregory won the 400-meter dash and was a member of a record-setting 4×400 meter relay team on February 4 at an invitational meet hosted by Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach. His time was 48.08 seconds, which broke his own school record of 48.76 that he set last February.   

Gregory, along with senior Gareth Ashton (Austin, Texas), junior Walter Douglas (Sanford, Florda) and Trey Johnson (Kyle, Texas) broke their own school record in the 4×400 meter relay by nearly six seconds with a time of 3:21.99. The previous mark was 3:27.58 seconds, set on December 3 at Shenandoah University.  

On January 26, in an indoor track meet at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, Gregory improved on his school record in the 60-meter dash. He crossed the finish line in 6.91 seconds to finish ninth overall in the semifinal round and just missed the cutoff for Saturday’s final round. Gregory’s previous school record time was 6.93 seconds, also set on December 3.  

Gregory won the 300-meter dash the same day with a time of 33.32 seconds. He was more than one second ahead of everyone else in this event. 

The next day, Gregory posted the fastest 200-meter dash indoor track time in NCAA Division III this season, crossing the finish line in 21.17 seconds in a meet at Virginia Military Institute. Incredibly, this was not even Gregory’s fastest time in the 200-meter dash; it was one-thousandth of a second slower than his school record, set last year.  

Gregory won the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships in 2022 and 2023. He is a three-time All-American in outdoor track and field, and was named an All-American in indoor track and field last year. 

Gallaudet has had six other student-athletes named All-Americans in track and field since 1983: Darius Flowers, ’14 (triple jump, 2011 and 2013), Kenneth Myers Jr., E-’07 (triple jump, 2004), Wayne Langbein, ’96 (discus, 1993); Richard Jacobs, ’91 (decathlon, 1990), Betsy Bachtel, ’89 (3,000 and 5,000 meter run, 1986), and David Conley, ’85 (discus, 1983). 

Another men’s indoor track and field school record was set last Sunday. First year pole vaulter Liam Painter (Edgewood, New Mexico) won the pole vault competition as he cleared 4.37 meters. Painter’s 4.37 meter mark broke his own school record of 4.10 meters, set on January 20.  

In addition, first-year sprinter Oceana Brown (Miami, Florida) broke two of her school records in women’s indoor track and field last Sunday. Brown placed third in the 60-meter dash and fifth in the 200-meter dash. She posted a record time of 7.92 seconds in the 60-meter dash, which improves on her previous record time of 8.06 seconds set in December. Her 200-meter time of 26.47 seconds erased her old record mark of 26.81 seconds, also set in December.
